Woyzeck

Woyzeck An adaptation of Georg Büchner’s German classic

Black Box Okhla, an unconventional space carved inside a factory, is a laboratory for exploration and performance. The factory’s unique architecture inspires environmental experiences that are impossible to create at traditional venues. Black Box Okhla is one of the few performance spaces in India that uses fully computerised systems to run lights and sound. Additionally, Black Box Okhla is the only venue that programs a single show for an entire month - an endeavour to match a worldwide standard of theatre programming and to make theatre sustainable.

Woyzeck is a stage play originally written around 1836. The play was left unfinished at the time of the playwright’s death and didn’t get its first production until 1913. Since then, it has become one of the most performed plays worldwide. The play questions the moral constructs that contain the animal inside a human being. It challenges the fragility of social behavior and the devastating impact of disenfranchisement. The play features Piyush Kumar, Farhad Colabavala, Madhav Mehta, Ariella Dawn, Samar Sarila, Uma Katju, Shaik Sheeba and Kshitij Mervin.

The Director:

Woyzeck is directed by Nikhil Mehta, the founder and Artistic Director of Black Box Okhla. Previously, he has been the assistant director for Sunday in the Park with George on Broadway starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He has also assisted Vishal Bhardwaj on development workshops for Monsoon Wedding The Musical and Rangoon.

The Story:
An unfinished, fragmented classic by the German playwright Georg Büchner, Woyzeck is the story of a young man's descent into madness as he grapples with his place in the world. Brought to life in a new adaptation at Black Box Okhla - an unconventional performance space carved inside a factory in the industrial belt of Delhi.
