Kaimurai, the artistic identity of Abishek Ganesh J, finds its first platform at Art Dubai, where he showcases his solo exhibition. His debut show with Blueprint Gallery stands as a testament to Art Dubai’s evolution as a cultural convergence fostering a space where new voices emerge and thrive.
Kaimurai’s work, deeply rooted in the natural indigo medium, serves as an eloquent dialogue between organic forms and the dynamic energies of the Western Ghats. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of ancient South Indian art, architecture, and Carnatic music, his layered compositions reflect an intricate interplay between tranquillity and intensity. Meeting the artist amidst this cultural confluence at Art Dubai offers an enriching experience that not only showcases individual creativity but also celebrates the collective spirit of contemporary artistry.
What does Kaimurai mean?
Kaimurai is a Tamil term that translates to “method of hand.” When I think about it, I love how it combines kai (hand) and murai (method), emphasising the beauty of craftsmanship and all the hands that contribute to the creation process.
I grew up in Bangalore but spent a lot of time in Chennai. My background is rich with Carnatic music, which has profoundly influenced my artistic journey. Music has always been a source of inspiration for me, shaping the way I express myself through art.
How did you first get involved with indigo?
My journey with indigo began during my time in the fashion industry while studying at NIFT Chennai. Initially, I worked with chemical pigments, but I found myself drawn to natural pigments like indigo, which opened up a whole new world of exploration for me.

Are your Kaimurai pieces part of a series?
I don’t see them as part of a series. Each piece I create is unique and feels like a personal prayer or meditation to me. Instead of following a traditional series format, I focus on capturing individual emotions and stories, often incorporating simple motifs or intricate layers.
What themes do you explore in your artwork?
One of the central themes I focus on is harmony. I strive to evoke a sense of balance in my work, which resonates with the rhythms I find in music and weaving. I want viewers to connect with the artwork on a deeper level and find their own sense of peace.
Can you describe your creative process?
I love working on wet surfaces! This allows the indigo pigment to flow freely, creating a beautiful interaction between my hand and the medium. I often embrace spontaneity, letting the artwork develop organically without pre-planning, which leads to unique forms and unexpected results.

How does the materiality of your work affect the viewer’s experience?
Experiencing my artwork in person is essential for truly grasping its essence! The tactile quality of the fabrics and the richness of the colors can’t be fully captured online. I find that the physical presence of my pieces creates an immersive experience that draws viewers in and encourages deep contemplation.
What message do you hope to convey through your work?
I aim to inspire calm and reflection. While I don’t claim to be saving the world, I hope that my work encourages people to consider their connection to nature and the memories that shape their lives. I believe that art can evoke a sense of peace and understanding.

How long have you been practicing as Kaimurai??
I’ve been immersed in Kaimurai for about six years now, with three of those years spent showcasing my work through Blueprint. This journey has allowed me to evolve as an artist and share my expression with a wider audience.
What do you want the audience to take away from your art?
I aim to inspire calm and reflection. While I don’t claim to be saving the world, I hope that my work encourages people to consider their connection to nature and the memories that shape their lives. I believe that art can evoke a sense of peace and understanding.
Engaging with Kaimurai offers a unique opportunity to connect with both the artwork and the stories behind it. Each piece invites viewers to explore their memories and emotions, making the experience deeply enriching and meaningful. I’d love for everyone to immerse themselves in this beautiful blend of craftsmanship and creativity!
