The Wicker Story

The Wicker Story

In the world of design, where tradition meets innovation, sustainability aligns with elegance, and the past is intricately woven with the future, one brand stands out: The Wicker Story. Founded by Priyanka Narula in 2019, The Wicker Story has carved a unique niche in the design landscape, offering an exquisite blend of art, architecture, and culture through its woven wonders. The "Dawn to Dusk" collection stands as a testament to the power of design to inspire, uplift, and connect us to the world around us. Through her work, Priyanka invites us to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the simple moments that define our lives.

From Architecture to Woven Art
Priyanka's journey began in architecture, a field she practiced for nearly six years after college. Her architectural education included a master's in digital design, focusing on parametric architecture and robotic manufacturing. This blend of futuristic ideas and technological aid aimed to bring complex imagery to life. However, translating these ideas into reality proved challenging in India, where the technology was either unavailable or prohibitively expensive. This led to a shift in her practice.

"I realized that the technology and economic factors weren't aligning with our vision. So, we decided to dive back a little, think more locally and regionally," Priyanka recalls. This pivot marked the beginning of The Wicker Story, where she started exploring traditional crafts as a medium to achieve her design aspirations.

The Dawn to Dusk Collection
The Wicker Story's latest collection, "Dawn to Dusk," encapsulates the ethereal transition from day to night, capturing the subtle shifts in light, color, and mood. Each piece is designed as a canvas, inspired by the serene moments of sunrise and sunset, and the vibrant hues of the natural world.

"The inspiration came from landscape paintings that depict the beautiful relation of colors during sunset and sunrise," says Priyanka. "We wanted each piece to be perceived as an art piece, with a contextual narrative that allows for different interpretations and settings."

Balancing Craftsmanship and Sustainability
At the heart of The Wicker Story is a commitment to sustainability and traditional craftsmanship. Priyanka explains how traditional Indian practices are inherently sustainable, using local materials and techniques that produce minimal waste. "Our work with natural fibers, like rattan, ensures that even with large-scale installations, the waste is minimal," she notes. "Craft inherently gives us a sustainable perspective. Everything we do is handmade, using natural materials."

Advice for Aspiring Designers
For those looking to make a mark in sustainable and innovative design, Priyanka offers valuable advice: "Respect the material, craft, and technique. Research, study, and work closely with those who dedicate their time to these crafts. The material and skill can offer so much more if you stick with it." She emphasizes the importance of persistence and dedication. "People thought we would run out of ideas after a few products, but the more we engaged with the material, the more it revealed itself. Five years in, we still have so much more to offer."
