Folklore Injiri

Injiri, a brand known for its exploration of Indian craft, has just released its latest Fall Winter 2024 collection, Folklore. Designed by Chinar Farooqui, the collection draws inspiration from regional traditions and textile practices, weaving narratives that reflect the profound connection between heritage and contemporary expression.

At the heart of Folklore is the idea of storytelling. Just as folklore preserves a community’s tales and customs, textiles carry stories passed down through generations. The collection merges ancient traditions with modern aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the Theyyam dance of Kerala, an ancestral folk practice performed to ward off evil spirits, the collection reflects how attires communicate cultural identity.

Folklore

Each garment in Folklore is a testament to Injiri’s appreciation for textile heritage. Through a process of "Decoding the Textiles," Injiri chronicles the origins of craft techniques and materials, reflecting the region they come from. The earthy tones—dark browns to blacks—echo natural colours found in Srinagar’s local fauna, like goat and sheep wool. By examining why certain fabrics prevail, Injiri embeds the story of these crafts into every thread.

“As I travelled through Barmer, Rajasthan, I was deeply inspired by the traditional weaving of Pattu shawls. The intricate technique, paired with modern silhouettes, became the foundation for this collection. For me, these garments aren’t just clothing; they’re symbols of cultural preservation, connecting the wearer to a rich and storied past” says Chinar founder & Designer, Injiri.

The collection comes to life in the short film Folklore: Weathering With You, which chronicles a Ladakhi girl’s transformative journey. Set in the Himalayan foothills, the film explores the connection between cultural heritage and personal growth, underscoring the theme of harmony between tradition and modernity. Central to the collection is the Ladakhi proverb, "The lamp of tradition does not rely on others to keep it alight." This saying encapsulates the collection's intent: to honour tradition while reimagining it for contemporary wear.
