What inspired you to start Neti Neti and focus on natural materials for your designs?
Starting Neti Neti was about crafting a dialogue with individuality. I wanted to move beyond the popular, predictable narratives in jewelry and create something authentic. I wanted jewelry to feel like an extension of the self—a piece that resonates on a deeper level. Natural materials, with their unique textures and forms, bring authenticity and a sense of grounding that speaks directly to that individuality I value. Each piece feels alive, with its own story, and that aligns with our core vision of fostering self-expression and connection to the earth.
Can you describe the connection between your latest collection, Yemaya, and the themes of exploration and transformation?
Yemaya is deeply personal, and it represents both a journey and a transformation. Yemaya, named after the Yoruba goddess of the ocean, embodies the dualities of life—serenity and chaos, strength and fluidity. The ocean is vast, mysterious, and constantly changing, much like personal transformation. In creating this collection, I wanted to capture that essence, exploring natural forms and materials that reflect this fluidity and depth. Each piece becomes a talisman of sorts, a reminder of the power within change and self-discovery, echoing the way the ocean shapes the shores it touches.
How do you see your work challenging traditional notions of jewelry-making?
I see Neti Neti as a bridge between art and wearable expression, pushing boundaries beyond typical jewelry aesthetics. Traditional jewelry often prioritizes uniformity and precious materials, but at Neti Neti, we embrace asymmetry, textures, and an interplay of natural materials. We work with stones, woods, and metals that reflect the imperfections of the natural world, challenging the idea that jewelry must be pristine or flawless. By crafting pieces that speak to self-expression and individuality, we invite wearers to connect with jewelry in a more personal, intuitive way, as art rather than mere adornment.
What role do you believe nature plays in your work and in the larger context of jewelry design?
Nature is the foundation of everything we create at Neti Neti—it informs, shapes, and sustains our design philosophy. The organic forms, patterns, and textures found in nature offer endless inspiration and remind us of our connection to the world around us. In a broader sense, jewelry design is experiencing a shift where consumers value sustainability and ethical sourcing. By upcycling natural materials, we not only honor the earth but also respond to a growing desire for meaningful pieces that don’t compromise the environment. Nature’s influence brings depth and intention, offering designs that resonate on an emotional level.
Looking ahead, what new directions or themes do you hope to explore in future collections?
Future collections will continue to delve into themes that resonate with our core values of exploration, self-expression, and connection to nature. I’m particularly interested in exploring cultural narratives and indigenous craftsmanship, which offer rich insights and honor diverse artistic legacies. We’re also looking into creating more versatile pieces, jewelry that adapts and transforms with the wearer’s journey.
