The Indian music scene had its big moments in 2022. The year saw mainstream and underground artists returning to perform at live shows and music festivals after years, alongside big releases that racked up huge streaming numbers and occupied the charts. Here’s a music roundup with highlights that we deem essential to the year that was 2022.
First edition of Lollapalooza India announced: The American music festival Lollapalooza announced its first ever Indian edition which is to be held in January 2023. The two day festival will be making its debut in Mumbai, with a stacked lineup consisting of global giants like The Strokes, Imagine Dragons, Diplo and more.
November saw the pioneer of Indian rap Divine return with his third album Gunehgar. It made waves internationally with star studded collaborations such as Russ, Jadakiss, Hit-boy, Armani White and others. The album encompassed a boom-bap drill sound which elevated standards for the Indian hip hop scene yet again.
After being the first Pakistani woman to win a Grammy for her song Mohabbat in the Best Global Performance category this year, artist Arooj Aftab bags another nomination at the Grammy’s for her track Udhero Na featuring sitarist Anoushka Shankar.
