Her journey as a textile artist began with childhood memories steeped in the vibrant hues and intricate patterns of Indian embroidery, a heritage she has lovingly embraced and expanded upon through her unique artistic vision.
Early Inspirations and Beginnings
Anuradha's fascination with embroidery traces back to her earliest memories of her mother adorned in exquisite Kantha sarees during festive occasions, particularly Durga Pujo. "My mother always dressed impeccably, saving her finest sarees for special celebrations," Anuradha reminisces. "Seeing her in those beautiful textiles naturally drew me to the art of embroidery and Indian textiles."
However, it was a bout of childhood illness that truly sparked Anuradha's journey into embroidery. "I was a hyperactive child, and during a period of being quarantined due to Chicken Pox, my mother found an ingenious way to keep me occupied," she explains with a smile. "She handed me a piece of fabric and taught me the basics: the running stitch, lazy daisy, and chain stitch. Little did she know, she had ignited a passion that would shape my life."
From those initial stitches, Anuradha's love affair with embroidery blossomed. "Even after I recovered, I found myself drawn to embroidery like a moth to flame. It became my refuge, my way of expressing creativity and finding solace," she shares. "My mother jokingly said she had to wean me off embroidery at times!"
All About Love
As Anuradha's skills developed, so did her desire to merge traditional techniques with contemporary themes. This evolution led to collaborations that pushed the boundaries of textile art. One such significant collaboration was with the fashion label Tree J.M., where Anuradha embarked on a project inspired by the writings of bell hooks.
"Jasna, the visionary behind Tree J.M., approached me after seeing my embroidery of bell hooks. We connected over our shared belief in social justice and equality," Anuradha explains. "We envisioned a collection that would celebrate liberation, love, and the profound insights of bell hooks' literary works." The result was the collection titled "All About Love, Knots of Liberation," where each garment bore Anuradha's meticulously handcrafted embroideries, bringing to life the essence of hooks' writings in wearable art.
The Creative Process
Anuradha's creative process is a blend of intuition, reflection, and meticulous craftsmanship. "I draw inspiration from everyday moments, capturing images on my phone and jotting down thoughts in my notebook," she describes. "When I decide on a concept, I sketch it out on muslin using a ballpoint pen. The embroidery itself evolves organically, guided by my emotions and the narrative I wish to convey."
Central to her artistic repertoire is the portrayal of people in their domestic sanctuaries. "I find immense beauty in capturing individuals at home, where they are most themselves," she reflects. "It's in these intimate spaces that we reveal our truest selves, surrounded by the artifacts and memories that shape our lives."
Through her artworks, Anuradha seeks to evoke a sense of belonging and tranquility amidst the chaos of modern life. "Embroidery, for me, is a meditative practice," she muses. "It requires patience and a deep connection with the materials and techniques. There's a rhythm to it that grounds me, allowing me to create with intention and mindfulness."

When asked about what sets embroidery apart as an art form, Anuradha contemplates its distinctive qualities. "Embroidery is a slow and deliberate process," she explains thoughtfully. For Anuradha, embroidery embodies a profound connection to tradition and craftsmanship. "It's about preserving cultural narratives and traditions while also pushing the boundaries of creativity," she asserts. "In a fast-paced world, embroidery invites us to slow down, to appreciate the beauty of handcrafted artistry."
