Nuanu

Nuanu

Nuanu, an innovative creative city, draws inspiration from the Balinese term “Nu-anu,” meaning “in the process.” This name reflects the continuous journey of exploring the future of humanity, living harmoniously with nature. Founded by Sergey Solonin, Nuanu embodies the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes life’s interconnectedness. The community thrives on the transformative power of collaboration, integrating education, art, wellness, and nature-inspired living. Through a conversation with the Spokesperson of Nuanu, Ida Ayu Astari Prada, we explore the, architecture, art curation and eco-conscious steps of this unique project.

A SENSE OF CALM
Our focus is more towards creating an environment that inspires both tranquility and vitality through immersive interactive experiences. The architecture of the creative city combines natural elements, open spaces, and areas designed to foster a sense of tranquility and balance. We collaborate with local and international architects to blend architecture, art, and nature seamlessly. This design philosophy not only encourages a sense of calm but also stimulates creativity and engagement.

CURATION PROCESS FOR ART INSTALLATION
The curation process for our art installations at Nuanu is diverse and unique for each piece. There is no single curator; instead, each installation undergoes its own distinct process to align with the vision and values of our community.

For instance, the THK Tower by French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani is based on the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. This 24-meter sculpture stands on Nuanu’s beachfront and serves as a bridge between innovation and tradition, emphasizing harmony with nature, people, and the divine. To bring this vision to life, four artists were invited to create generative content that reflects these principles, making the THK Tower a contemporary representation of ancient wisdom.

Nuanu Earth Sentinels by Daniel Popper

Earth Sentinels by Daniel Popper

South African artist Daniel Popper’s Earth Sentinels embody a sense of guardianship for Nuanu and the Earth. Ukrainian artist and sculptor collaborated with local masters, under the guidance of Gede Sarnatika, to create the LUNA art installation.

We also hosted an art residency curated by Ignatia Nilu. This residency explored themes of ecological change, human-nature relations, and technology, fostering sustainable art practices that integrate seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

This multifaceted approach ensures that each installation not only enriches our cultural and aesthetic landscape but also resonates deeply with the principles of creativity, collaboration, and positive change.
