R: Tantra Series
Das has a very interesting career trajectory and is among the rare indigenous artists to have received formal art education, nonetheless at M.S.U., Baroda. Post his education, he decided to return to his village in Madhubani and continue his art practice in his own way. His work is an amalgamation of the old and new, traditional and contemporary in a very unique way. At IAF 2022 , Ojas Art presents a solo show of his works spanning three decades of his work making it like a mini retrospective for the artist. This is the first time that a gallery is presenting a solo booth of a living indigenous (tribal / traditional ) artist at the India Art Fair. Das’ never seen before Tantra series from the early 1990s will be a part of the showcase. Also, works will be shown from his other series – Krishna, Kaali and Lovers. There will be more than 30 works on display.
“Whether inspired by the world around him or the domain of religious iconography and myth, Santosh Kumar Das reimagines and reroutes conventional and mythical realities. On a path that began with his cultural and familial inheritance of traditional forms, he first identified what was essential to Mithila art - its language of line - and from there developed his own distinctive dialect, timbre and tone. Like many individuals who leave home and return transformed, through his vision, ambition and expansive spirit, rooted in, but not bound by tradition, Santosh Kumar Das exemplifies how to live as an artist in the world,” adds Kathryn Myers about Das’ work.
“Ojas Art is delighted to present a solo booth by Santosh K Das at India Art Fair 2022, a big first for indigenous arts. A distinguished artist and revered for his work, Ojas Art has been consistently working with Das since 2016." explains Anubhav Nath, Director, Ojas Art.
