Temple Visits Turned into Garments
During my visits to the temples, I was deeply moved by the intricate carvings and the powerful representation of feminine divinity and strength. The sculptures, with their ornate jewellery and the way they distorted anatomy, inspired me to incorporate 3-D stone carved textures in my designs. This technique I created, mimics the intricate details and textures found in the temple sculptures. The rich cultural heritage and the narratives of feminine power influenced the overall theme of my collection, where I reimagine these deities as modern-day ‘art addicts’, merging traditional artistry with raw provocative energy.

Creative Process
My creative process begins with deep research and immersion into the elements that inspire me. For this collection, I started by studying the sculptures and draped garments from the temples and the Muria tribe. I then experiment with materials, focusing on sustainability by sourcing deadstock fabrics and repurposing them. I explore textures and silhouettes, often drawing from traditional techniques, like hand-stitching, to recreate the intricate details I observed. The design process is iterative, where I continuously refine the garment to ensure it resonates with the story I want to tell while being innovative and sustainable.

Latest Collection, Awakening Kakanmath Kalavatis
The name Awakening Kakanmath Kalavatis is a tribute to the Kakanmath temple, a symbol of feminine divinity and strength in my hometown. ‘Kalavatis’ refers to the artistic deities I reimagine in my collection—women who challenge norms and embody creativity and power. The theme of awakening reflects the resurgence of these ancient, powerful figures in a contemporary setting. Through this collection, I aim to bring their energy to life, celebrating their artistic legacy while infusing it with modern-day rebellion and creativity.

Aspirations for the Future
My aspirations for the future revolve around continually creating work that excites me, keeps me on the edge and rekindles my passion for the art of creation time and again. I’m drawn to the unpredictability of what the future holds, as it adds a sense of adventure and excitement to the creative process. As for the kind of materials or designs I wish to explore, I aim to delve deeper into sustainable practices, possibly discovering new ways to repurpose or innovate with deadstock fabrics. I’m also interested in innovating in materials I use, as that usually becomes a compass for me to navigate my journey within a collection.
